Dog Backpack
from: Kyle BesserDog backpacks are an old idea, almost as old as the domestication of dogs themselves. For as long as dogs have been helping humans in their tasks, there have been people who utilize dog backpacks as a means of having dogs help carry the load, be it food and water or camping equipment.
If you are lover of the great outdoors, chances are your dog is too. Your dog loves to go on long walks with you around your neighborhood or maybe to the local dog park where he can run around freely. Perhaps you go on long nature walks. Perhaps you go camping and hiking in national parks. Don't you love to take your canine buddy with you on these adventures? In certain national parks and forests you can take your dog along with you.
If you want to, you can have your dog help you carry the load, too. Dog backpacks are hardly a new idea, but for those of us who want to take our dogs with us on camping trips or while hiking, dog backpacks can be a welcome addition to our standard camping gear. With the use of a dog backpack, your dog can help carry your camping gear to and from the campsite. If you are hiking or backpacking, a dog backpack allows your dog to help carry water, food or other backpacking gear.
Before you purchase dog backpacks for your dogs, make sure your dogs are in good health. Only healthy dogs should be helping to carry gear on nature outings. If your dog is full grown and in good shape, you can allow your dog to carry up to one quarter of its body weight. For a larger dogs, that could be 15 to 20 pounds that you won't have to carry.
Make sure the dog backpack fits well. If you've ever had a backpack that doesn't fit properly, you know how uncomfortable that can be. The dog backpack should fit securely around the dog's body, but you should still be able to fit your finger between the strap and the dog's body. Also check the fit when your dog lies down, stands up, and sits, because different positions can greatly affect the fit of the dog backpack.
If your dog doesn't take to the dog backpack right away, you can train your dog to enjoy a dog backpack and associate it with pleasurable activities with you. If your dog has never worn a dog backpack, reassure your dog in a calm voice as you place a blanket or towel on his back so he can get used to having weight on his back before using an actual dog backpack.
Once your dog is accustomed to the weight of a blanket or towel, you can put the dog backpack on your dog and let your dog wear it while it is empty. Once your dog is used to the empty dog backpack, you can start putting small plastic water bottles in the dog backpack and allow your dog to adjust gradually to the feel of carrying weight in the dog backpack. Be careful to not give the dog more weight than is safe for your dog to carry in the dog backpack.
